Thunderbeard Records Interview
I recently had the chance to interview Casey whose label Thunderbeard Records is preparing to release their pressing of You, Me, And Everyone We Know's EP A Great Big Hole.
For those who aren't familiar with Thunderbeard Records your label was named Red Beard Records. Why did you decide to change it?
Casey: Red Beard Records was a quick choice for a “label name” in 2012. My friends were releasing a record on vinyl and wanted me to manage the release. So I quickly came up with Red Beard Records and slapped an imprint on the back of their album. 2013 has offered me some great opportunities, and with those opportunities comes exposure on popular music blogs. Every time they mentioned Red Beard Records, every blog would post a link to a different Red Beard Records store than mine. It appears that they are defunct and no longer release anything, but I wanted to fix this problem before I moved any further. The result: Thunderbeard Records.
What made you decide to start the label?
After helping my friends release their album, I thought that would be it. The decision to start a legit label happened in January. I was offered to help on a co-op release, and had a couple of bands contact me about some other releases, and at a certain point, it just made sense to try.
You are working on pressing You, Me, And Everyone We Know's A Great Big Hole EP right now. What can fans of the band expect from the vinyl pressing of the album?
This has been a blast to press, and is going to set the bar for all future Thunderbeard releases. I have worked directly with Ben, and the end result is going to be something that he is proud of. Ben wanted to make this release as personal as possible between him and his fans, and I feel we definitely accomplished that.
There are initially going to be 500 pressed: /350 on black and /150 on green.
How did it work out for you to press A Great Big Hole?
It fell into my lap. I logged into my e-mail one day and had a message expressing interest in this being pressed. Here we are a month later, and it is being pressed.
Cassino's Kingprince recently got repressed and you worked some on that album. What was your involvement in the process of that album?
I helped out with the screen-printing side of things. It was the aforementioned co-op release that I was a part of. The label headed the release wanted to give Goodnight Sweet Prints (in my hometown; Columbus, IN) a shot. Matt from GSP is the coolest dude ever, and he literally prints out of love.
Through him, I’ve learned a ton about the screen-printing process. The quality of his work will also be showcased on the A Great Big Hole jackets.
After you finish the pressing of YMAEWK what are your plans for the remainder of 2013?
2013 is going to be an interesting year. I have a couple of “oldies-but-goodies” coming up this Summer, and I am working on the details with a bad-ass rock band from Detroit. Thunderbeard releases should be plentiful this year.On top of the records, I will be travelling around the Midwest and selling Thunderbeard apparel at some bearding competitions.
I guess that about wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have any closing comments you'd like make?
