The Winter Passing - Scrapbook (EP REVIEW)

The Winter Passing's new EP Scrapbook is a nice introduction to the group. I first heard about this group from the Broken Heart Records sampler Unsigned/Unrest and when I got the chance to review the EP I was very interested to check it out.

After listening to the EP in its entirety I couldn't help but notice the standout track "Crooks" which is steeped in early era-emo Get Up Kids like influences. Opening track "1990" may possibly be the best track on the EP. The vocals are done really nicely. The track is short but it is a really good introduction to the EP. The track "Feels Like" starts as a decent overall song and when it kicks in at around 1:10 it really picks up and offers that Matt Pryor-esque early-emo influence that worked so well for the group on "Crooks". The trade-off of male and female vocals also works very well throughout the EP.

The production of the EP sounds slightly rough around the edges, which adds a lot to the sound and style of the band, at least on this EP. It could however detour some listeners who prefer a super polished sound. It's definitely a nice sound and a well written batch of songs for this time of the year. If you're looking for some good new music The Winter Passing might just be the right fit for you. I would recommend checking them out. If you are a fan of the early-era emo sound from bands like Jimmy Eat World, The Get-Up Kids, etc...you should be able to enjoy this.
