Shooter Jennings - The Other Life (ALBUM REVIEW)
Shooter Jennings has become a mainstay on my music playing devices for some time. His albums, to me, have always delivered something I found to be pretty enjoyable. So I was excited to hear Shooter would be back with his new album The Other Life this March.
First off, Shooter has made a habit over the course of his career of being an interesting artist. Over the last few years Shooter has released the industrial electronic tinged Black Ribbons to his most country output with last years Family Man. I found the last couple Shooter albums to be pretty good overall with a great a deal of interesting songs. What I really like about The Other Life is while this album does have slower songs there are also quite a few songs where Shooter finds the time to really rock and really amps up the energy on this one.
The great thing about this album is it is chocked to the brim with good quality songs and lyrics. I think this causes the album to really excel at its highest potential and in turn it becomes one of Shooter’s best works to date. It at times feels deep and introspective and at other times is screaming rock'n'roll ruckus. The title track “The Other Life” sticks out as an extremely well written song lyrically and musically. It definitely warrants a few repeated listens. Meanwhile tracks like "The Low Road" are slightly more amped up and deliver the up-tempo element I really enjoy from Shooter. In fact "The Low Road" is screaming to be picked as a single at some point.
Overall, if you are a Shooter fan or are just getting into him this is a good album to start at. It delivers quite well. It may in all truth be my favorite album of his since Electric Rodeo. If you've been a Shooter fan over the course of his career you should be pleased with this album. It's a quality batch of songs that once again shows Shooter is continuing to be a standout name in the genre.
