Abel - Lesser Men (ALBUM REVIEW)

Abel’s Lesser Men is a really well done album. The album will be released on Come&Live! which is a very interestingly run “label” itself. This label’s current releases mostly prove they strive for quality artists over quantity. Lesser Men is another example of a quality release.
The album is a heavy hitting album. Vocally it is great. The singer has a unique vocal style that fits well with the music and provides plenty of sing-along-worthy moments throughout the album. The production is nice. Everything sounds crisp and clean but not clean to the point where the music loses its edge. The drums on Lesser Men stick out to me every time I listen to this album. They are mixed nicely and are really well done. The album does a nice job of creating a mood and an atmosphere. The atmosphere extends through the album and really builds on the listener.
The use of strings in songs like “The Martyr” helps add a lot to the song. This song itself proves to be one of my favorite off the album. It has about everything you could want in a song. It has strong lyrics, it has both heavy and melodic elements, and it has a nice rock edge while it ends on very earnest vocals and an acoustic guitar strumming. “Take Me Home” is another nice song that has a ballad feel and ends with a nice full band transition. Vocally it kind of reminds me of Ben Jorgensen (Armor For Sleep). Another memorable moment on the album is in “Atlantic: The Broke Hearted King” where the vocalist sings, “I can hear the trumpets sounding in the distance…” This is followed by some nice horns, which shows the attention to all the small details on the album.
Lyrically the album is really strong. It deals with faith and spirituality and the songs are sung with meaning and sincerity. Lyrics are always important to me and it is nice to hear a release with well thought out lyrics.
Abel’s Lesser Men is an album that definitely strives for a lot. On many levels, it accomplishes its goals. There are not too many setbacks on the album. It sounds like the band went in with a vision for the album and accomplished much of what they set out to accomplish. I would definitely recommend checking this one out.
