Young L Interview

Here is another interview from archive that I did for Substream a while back. Young L is a producer form the Bay Area. He is in the Hip Hop groups The Pack and Young Squad. I know you get this question a lot but for those who don't know you created a new style of music/life called Based that spawned from the hyphy movement. When did you first know you had something different? And could you describe the idea behind the based style?
It’s really about being free spirited with your music and not holding back creatively. I knew I had something diff when me and b linked up before we started the pack. Me and b jus clicked musically and socially. It just started making music and getting high after school.

The Pack are responsible for a big underground movement and their have been groups pop up with similar sounds like Diligentz and Teamknoc. There has also been movements going in other areas noteable Chicago with The Cool Kids. Lately there have been a lot of Hip Hop artists stepping outside of the traditional box what do you think has been a cause of this?
Just the younger generation of rap. That's all it is. New ways of expression from a whole different group. You gotta think outside of the box these days or you’re just a statistic bro. Real talk. You gotta b a legend.

The Pack have a new mixtape coming out soon called Screamin Demons. Do you have an official release date for the mixtape yet and what about the mixtape will be different from Based Boys?
Na we don't we just finished the artwork were just waiting on our engineer to master it. We will keep the myspace updated as far as a release date. Most of the songs on based boyz were done in a small period of time just lumped together. The songs on this next mixtape are from older shit and some newer so its a wide range. Also, it’s the 3rd of the Wolfpack Music series

You also have a double disc mixtape coming out soon called Cutty Row/Based Sensation. Can you tell me a little about what to expect from the mixtape, will it feature more of the based singing heard on "Honey With Me"?
Yes. Based sensation is a compilation of more melodic singing songs whereas the cutty row is more party/slap/hard pounding tracks. All good music. It shows the birth of me as an individual artist

Based Boys came out a while back on Jive and you guys are no longer with Jive. Do you think Jive dropped the ball with the album and really didn't get what you guys were trying to do?
Yea... they just didn't understand us... were very different and on top of that sometimes people get the vibe we don't give a fuck about shit and they get mad. We still gonna hustle regardless believe that.

You and Lil B dropped the first S.S. mixtape a while back and introduced Young Squad. Are there any plans for a Young Squad album?
Yea it’s just hard because OT lives like 2 hours away. Also I got my hands full wit a lot of shit I'm producing about 4 projects including Young Squad's debut album. Everything is gonna b dope and to make everything good it takes time. No doubt we stay at work.

You have three brothers that also make hip hop music. How big of a role did you play getting them into making music?
Major. Haha. I give them beats, guidance, insight, and inspiration

The members of The Pack all have solo material. Stunna has released a mixtape and I know Lil B is working on his new mixtape. How much production do you do on their solo efforts?
Stunna I didn't really have anything to do with his mixtape because he had other producers he was working with. On the other hand. I have a mixtape in progress with b that I'm producing 100% it’s called the Based Bible.

You have the Kirby tattoo on your hand and a Kirby chain. What is it about Kirby that you like so much?
Well it’s not Kirby it’s actually Boo, the ghost from Mario and Mario cart. I just like the impression it leaves. Subtle yet still most def. A threat.

I know you've been working on a clothing line. Some stuff is available. Can you tell me a little bit about it and what people can expect?
It’s some sick shit coming out soon I knocked some designs out yesterday. The link for the online store is on my myspace. Also, people can expect a new, fresh, based, legendary look from the new shit dropping from PD.
